Peter's projection map
In the clip we watched there some points that I thought were good and some that weren't really viable. The first point that I thought was strange was how it fostered the idea of European imperialist attitudes. I think this is not true because I think people just accept the fact that they are where they are on the globe because that is how it is. They can't change or move where the continents are. If this was a really big problem I think that we would have started using the Peter Projection map long ago. The second little point to me is that the map was enlarged so that sailors could make straight lines and find their way around the globe. I think that when planes were invented or when we stopped using boats as a major form of transportation we should have changed the map to its actual size. In the video they then go into the fact that everything is distorted and how some things like Greenland are a lot smaller and South America is a lot bigger. They talk about how size is associated with importance and power. I think that this is important but at the same time, who really gets offended that their country is to small and who boasts about how big their country is. We no associate power with things like population and man power.
